Signs Your Pet May Be in Pain

Pets are often very good at hiding discomfort. If you notice any of the changes below, it may be time to schedule an exam so we can identify the cause and discuss next steps.

  • Mobility changes: limping, stiffness, difficulty jumping, reluctance to use stairs
  • Behavior changes: hiding, irritability, restlessness, decreased interest in play
  • Appetite or sleep changes: eating less, sleeping more, trouble getting comfortable
  • Grooming or posture changes: over-grooming a specific area, hunched posture, guarding
  • Vocalizing: whining, yelping, or unusual meowing (especially when touched or moving)

If your pet seems painful suddenly (for example: they cannot put weight on a leg), please call us right away for guidance. We offer urgent care during business hours through work-in appointments.

Our Approach to Veterinary Pain Management

Pain management is not one-size-fits-all. We start with a medical exam and a conversation about what you’re seeing at home. From there, we build a plan based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, underlying conditions, and diagnosis.

Depending on your pet’s needs, a pain management plan may include:

  • Diagnostics to help identify the source of discomfort (such as digital radiology and/or ultrasound)
  • Prescription medications and clear dosing instructions, with convenient pickup through our fully stocked pharmacy
  • Supportive therapies when appropriate, including laser therapy
  • Lifestyle support (activity adjustments, home setup recommendations, and comfort tips)
  • Nutrition planning when weight, muscle condition, or diet changes can impact comfort—see nutritional counseling

For senior pets with chronic pain concerns, you may also want to explore our senior care resources and schedule a checkup through our wellness exams service.

Veterinary pain assessment and treatment planning

Common Reasons Pets Need Pain Control

Pain can be acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term). Some of the most common situations where we discuss pain relief include:

  • Arthritis and age-related stiffness (especially in older dogs and cats)
  • Injuries involving muscles, ligaments, or joints
  • Dental discomfort (see dental care)
  • After surgery, including procedures through surgery and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery
  • Medical conditions that require ongoing comfort-focused care (we can also coordinate with our hospice and euthanasia services when quality of life is the main priority)

If your pet has symptoms that could involve the heart (such as weakness or collapse), we may recommend additional evaluation, including electrocardiography, depending on what we find on exam.

Laser therapy as part of a multimodal pain management plan

Pain Relief Options (Including Laser Therapy)

Our team may recommend multiple strategies at the same time (often called a “multimodal” approach) to improve comfort while supporting healing and function.

One option we offer is laser therapy, which can be used as part of a broader plan when appropriate. If you have questions about whether your pet is a candidate, we’re happy to discuss it during an exam.

When medication is part of the plan, we’ll review what to watch for and how to give prescriptions safely. Many medications can be filled through our in-house pharmacy for convenience.

What You Can Do at Home to Help a Painful Pet

Small changes at home can make a big difference—especially for pets with stiffness or chronic discomfort. After we evaluate your pet, we may recommend steps such as:

  • Traction & comfort: rugs/mats on slippery floors, supportive bedding, ramps where helpful
  • Routine adjustments: shorter, more frequent walks (for dogs) and easier access to litter boxes (for cats)
  • Nutrition support: diet changes or structured plans through nutritional counseling
  • Preventive care: keeping your pet healthier overall with regular wellness exams, appropriate vaccinations, and parasite prevention

Important: Never give human pain medication to pets unless a veterinarian has specifically instructed you to do so.
